Synkplay keeps a video playing at the same second on everyone's screen. Pause, and it pauses for the whole room. Seek, and everyone lands in the same place. It is an unofficial client for Syncplay, and it speaks the same protocol as the desktop client, so you can watch with people running either one.

Play files from your own device, or paste a link. The video player is built in, with several engines to choose from: mpv, ExoPlayer and the experimental KitePlayer. Between them they cover nearly every container and codec, with external subtitles, chapters and picture in picture.

What it does

Synchronised play, pause and seek with everyone in the room.
Chat, with GIFs, while you watch.
A shared playlist the whole room moves through together.
Subtitle search and download from OpenSubtitles, plus your own subtitle files.
Host your own server from the app, with no account and no setup.
Managed rooms, where one person holds the controls.
Picture in picture, so the video stays while you do something else.
Themes you can build yourself, and a settings screen that lets you tune almost everything.
Eight languages, and more through Weblate.

Privacy

No account, no analytics, no advertising. The app talks to the server you choose to join, and to a service only when you use the feature that needs it.

WhatsNew:

Audio files can be picked and played, not only video. KitePlayer draws the sound while they play, and the drawing follows the song.

A remote reaches every control, so the app works on Android TV. Where there is no file picker, it lists the videos on the device.

An invite link opens a web page that hands you into the room.

The room's side panels are one thing now. Chat colours are yours to set, and the playlist reorders by dragging a row.

While you can download the APKs here directly, you should preferably use an F-Droid client so the app stays up-to-date on your device. Some clients have this repo enabled by default, e.g. Neo Store, Droid-ify, or, of course, the IzzyOnDroid client by Sunil. With others (like the official client) you'll have to add this repo manually (see the hint on top of the package list for how to do that).
